Using Electric Blankets Safely: What Are the Risks?

Electric blankets, heated underblankets and heated throws are popular during the colder months. They are safe only when their design matches the intended use, the product is undamaged and the manufacturer’s instructions are followed consistently. Old or damaged products, kinked heating wires, moisture and overnight use for which the model is not approved are particularly hazardous.

The short answer: are electric blankets dangerous?

Scorch marks, discolouration, exposed wires, a damaged cable, an unusual smell, humming or a controller that becomes hot mean one thing: unplug it immediately and stop using it.

A modern, undamaged electric blanket used as intended is not an improvised heater. The risk increases if heating elements are bent or crushed, heat cannot escape, cables or controllers are damaged, or the blanket is used damp, folded or unattended contrary to the instructions.

The most important rule is therefore to use only a product in perfect technical condition and in exactly the intended position. A heated underblanket belongs on the mattress; a heated overblanket belongs over the body. The product label and instructions state what is permitted for each model.

Before first use: the safety check

With the product unplugged, spread it out completely and inspect both sides. Carefully feel for unusual thickening, displaced heating elements or hard creases. Also check the connection to the blanket, the controller, the mains plug and the entire cable.

If the blanket has been stored for a long time or is second-hand, important information about its age, previous damage and permitted cleaning may be missing. If its origin is unclear or its condition is doubtful, not using it is safer than carrying out a brief test.

  • no burn marks, scorching or discolouration

  • no open seams, exposed wires or worn areas

  • no crushing, breaks or loose connections on the cable

  • the controller and connection do not become unusually hot

  • the product label and instructions can still be clearly matched to the blanket

Prevent heat build-up: do not fold, crease or weigh it down

Heating elements distribute warmth over a large area. If the blanket is folded, bunched up or weighed down by heavy objects while in use, heat can accumulate in one area and place mechanical strain on the wiring. A mains cable trapped between the bed, wall and furniture can also be damaged.

Spread out the product as specified by the manufacturer. Pets, suitcases, heavy duvets and other objects must not be placed on an electric blanket that is switched on unless the instructions expressly allow this. Underblankets must be secured so that they cannot slip and form folds.

Underblanket, overblanket or heat pad: do not confuse the designs

A heated underblanket is secured to the mattress as instructed by the manufacturer and is not wrapped around the body like an ordinary blanket. A heated overblanket or throw is designed for use over the body. Heat pads warm smaller areas and must not automatically be used like a blanket.

The instructions for the specific product are decisive. Do not turn a blanket over, roll it up for use as a pillow or place it beneath an unsuitable mattress topper. Safety features cannot reliably compensate for misuse.

Can an electric blanket be left switched on overnight?

Only models expressly approved for overnight or continuous use may remain switched on in accordance with their instructions. A timer or automatic shut-off is helpful, but it does not replace the manufacturer’s approval. If the model is not approved, switch it off and disconnect it from the mains before falling asleep.

Anyone who has taken medication or consumed alcohol, is very tired, or has a reduced ability to perceive heat and pain may notice overheating too late. Follow the manufacturer’s specific instructions for children, people in need of care and anyone with reduced heat sensitivity. If in doubt, do not allow unattended use.

  • overnight use only if the model is expressly approved

  • select the temperature setting and switch-off time according to the instructions

  • do not place the controller beneath a pillow or blanket

  • do not use the blanket for a person who cannot respond independently if the instructions prohibit this

  • test smoke alarms in sleeping areas regularly

Water, hot-water bottles and cleaning

Electricity and moisture are a dangerous combination. Do not use an electric blanket when it is wet, and do not switch it on to dry it more quickly. A hot-water bottle can leak and must therefore not be used in the same bed at the same time. Drinks should also not be placed above an electric blanket that is switched on.

Wash the product only if and as permitted by the instructions. The controller must be removed from some models, while others must not be placed in a washing machine or tumble dryer at all. After permitted cleaning, the blanket must be completely dry before it is reconnected.

Correct storage and checking recalls

Allow the blanket to cool completely and store it somewhere dry, either flat, loosely rolled or folded only as permitted by the manufacturer. Heavy objects placed on the stored blanket can kink the heating elements. The cable should lie loosely and must not be wound tightly around the controller or blanket.

Age alone does not prove that a product is defective, but it makes critical inspection more important. If the instructions and rating label are missing, or if the material and connections are visibly aged, the product should be replaced. If you are unsure, check the brand and model in the European Safety Gate and on the manufacturer’s recall page.

What should you do if you notice a smell, smoke or scorch marks?

Switch off the product and unplug it only if it is safe to do so. If there is smoke or fire, warn other people, leave the room, close the door if possible and call the fire brigade on 112. Do not use water on a burning electric blanket.

You should attempt to extinguish a fire only if it is a small incipient-stage fire, you have a clear escape route and there is no danger from smoke. The article Extinguishing an Incipient-Stage Fire: When to Act and When Not To explains the safe order of decisions. Guidance on other seasonal heat sources is available in Using Heaters Safely.

Checklist: using an electric blanket safely

A short check before each heating season helps identify gradual damage and unsafe habits in good time. Care facilities, shared accommodation and workplaces should also have internal rules and responsibilities. Workplace fire safety instruction can explicitly cover electrical heating products of this kind.

  • blanket, connection, controller and cable are undamaged

  • the design and intended position are clearly understood

  • the product lies flat and the heating elements are not kinked

  • cable and controller are unobstructed, dry and uncovered

  • no hot-water bottle, drinks or damp textiles are nearby

  • overnight use only with the manufacturer’s express approval

  • cleaning and storage are carried out exactly as instructed

  • a smoke alarm is installed and operational

Frequently asked questions

Can an electric blanket catch fire?

Yes. Damaged heating elements or connections, heat build-up and technical defects can cause overheating, scorching and, in the worst case, a fire. If warning signs appear, stop using the product immediately.

Can you sleep on an electric blanket?

Only if it is a heated underblanket designed for that purpose and it is secured and used exactly as specified by the manufacturer. A heated overblanket must not automatically be used as an underblanket.

Can an electric blanket remain switched on all night?

Only if the manufacturer expressly approves the specific model for overnight use. Otherwise, switch it off and disconnect it from the mains before falling asleep.

Can an electric blanket be washed?

That depends on the model. The instructions specify the washing temperature, whether the controller can be removed and the permitted drying method. A blanket that is not completely dry or has been cleaned contrary to the instructions must not be connected.

What does a hot controller or an unusual smell mean?

Either can indicate a defect or an overheated connection. Unplug the blanket, stop using it and have it inspected by a qualified person or replace it.
